Fundamentals
Sun Facts
American Academy of Dermatology’s top skin cancer and sun facts:
Seek the shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM
- The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. If your shadow is shorter than you, seek shade.
Do not burn
- Most skin cancers are related to sun exposure, which is preventable, yet skin cancer rates continue to climb.
- If your skin blisters after a sunburn, you have a second-degree burn.
- UV rays can cause premature aging of skin and skin cancer.
- By the time your skin gets red (burned) or darker, it has already been damaged.
Avoid tanning and UV tanning booths
- Melanin is the pigment that “tans” your skin, but it is produced by the skin in response to sun damage.
- Use of indoor tanning (tanning beds) before the age of 35 has been associated with a significant increase in the risk of melanoma.
Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses
- MrPoolParty recommends that you wear a super cute, super fun hat (preferably our super cute cowboy hats) and sunglasses to help shade sensitive skin areas that are in direct sunlight.
- MrPoolParty also sees this as a perfect opportunity to make friends with people that are in cabanas, boats, etc… Buy a round of shots for the host and thank them for their generous shade!
Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day
- For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
- “Broad-spectrum protection” protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
- So what is the difference between UVA and UVB rays?
- UVB rays are responsible for producing sunburn, which can totally ruin your massage time!! How are you ever going to enjoy your much deserved vacation rub down with a painful sunburn on your body? Additionally, UVB rays cause cancer and nasty looking black moles (Malignant Melanoma), that wreck your picture perfect selfies!
- UVA rays penetrate more deeply in the skin and play a greater role in catching wrinkles!!! OMG, AND, there are 500 times more UVA rays in sunlight than UVB.
- Girls, gentlemen, please just wear sunscreen. No matter your age and how many wrinkles you already have.
- MrPoolParty believes in helping you avoid any damage or further damage to your skin so you can keep vibrant, healthy-looking skin forever!!!
- Most dermatologists agree SPF 30 is sufficient, based on the total amount of solar energy released on a typical summer day.
Apply sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside
- Reapply every two hours, or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating.
- MrPoolParty recommends that you look around and ask someone, yes, anyone, to apply and continue to reapply MrPoolParty Sunscreen throughout the day (hopefully by someone different, fun, and super cute each time you need reapplying).
Keep newborns out of the sun. Sunscreens should be used on babies over the age of six months
Examine your skin head-to-toe every month
- If you notice any spots changing, growing or bleeding on your skin, see a dermatologist.
See your physician every year for a professional skin exam
